Safety Innovation:
Ground-Level Refuelling
Refuelling should never put someone at unnecessary risk, especially when working with AdBlue.
Building on work started in 2022, CPI has advanced its ground-level AdBlue and Diesel refuelling system in collaboration with SMT GB, moving from pilot to full fleet rollout.
The system eliminates working-at-height, repositions fill points to ground level, and adds an integrated pump with an external control panel so operators remain safely on the ground.
It was first commercially deployed at Tarmac’s Dolyhir Quarry and, following success in the Southwest, has now been installed across CPI’s entire Volvo excavator fleet, including the new F series.
Operator feedback has been overwhelmingly positive, highlighting easier access, cleaner processes, and reduced exposure to slips and manual-handling strain.
Falls from height remain one of the MPA’s “Fatal Six” high-consequence risks. CPI’s goal is to engineer hazards out and scale solutions that demonstrably improve safety across the fleet and supply chain.
Ground-level refuelling is now being included in equipment specifications for future orders. For clients, the benefit is safety built into the method, not added as an afterthought.
For recruits, it demonstrates CPI’s SHEQ philosophy: engineer out exposure, measure outcomes, and listen to the people using the kit every day.
It’s a practical innovation that makes operations both safer and faster.
